Scroll binders
& wimples

What is a binder?

Torah are mounted on two staves known as Etzim Hayim (trees of life) or Etzim for short. The Torah are held together either with binders, or alternatively wimples which typically, are made from the swaddling cloth which covers the new-born male during the circumcision ceremony. Afterwards the cloth is cut into four and sewn together to form a long, continuous piece. Very often the wimple will be painted and/or embroidered with the name of the child and his father with the invocation God should protect him, he should have a bar mitzvah, marry under a Chuppah, study Torah and perform good deeds.
